WHO IS IGS?

Have you ever wanted to work for a company doing something truly incredible, disruptive and working for the greater good of planet Earth? Well, here is your chance. Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS) is a fast growing innovative Agritech OEM changing how the world does farming. Their leading edge indoor vertical farming towers allow IGS to control the weather and grow a range of plants, crops, fruit and herbs simultaneously at optimum conditions anywhere in the world.

Employing over 200 staff between sites in Edinburgh, outside Dundee and Inverkeithing in Fife, we are starting to sell vertical farming towers globally. We have successfully run an intern programme across multiple functions for a few years and this year is no different! At this point we welcome applications for intern opportunities in our Data Science/Engineering team.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Data Applications team brings together the data from the growth towers (e.g., machine telemetry and environmental data) and crops (e.g., images, measurements) and use advanced analytical techniques including AI and ML to create valuable applications for IGS customers. The team is comprised of Data Scientists, Data Engineers and visualisation experts who work together on each project to take it from a concept to a product.
The internship project(s) will take a new idea/project and work through the different stages to produce a proof-of-concept model. This includes:
  • Data Collection/Validation
  • Research into the best model/tool to build
  • Building the prototype and testing it
  • Time permitting, validating the prototype with live testing at either our engineering or crop research sites.
You have two options open to you to deliver this assignment:
  • Option 1: Crop monitoring is using data from the towers (e.g., images) to automatically ‘watch’ the crops and check that they are growing as expected. This project would develop a crop monitoring tool. This would either be using computer vision or building a model that analyses the data steams looking for anomalies.
  • Option 2: The Growth Towers use resources (electricity, water, nutrient etc.) to grow the crop. There is a need to monitor/check what resources are used by which crops and if the resources are being used optimally. This project would develop a tool to check and optimise resource use in the tower.
WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE?
  • A report on the project. Similar to writing up a science project. What did you do, did it work, what could be improved?
  • A clearly written code base that runs the model/tool. The intern will be supported/learn from our existing code.
  • 15-minute presentation + questions from the wider Data Applications team.

This will help IGS test if an idea can be turned into a prototype and give the team a better idea of how difficult it would be to turn it into a fully-fledged project. It will give the intern exposure to working in a commercial environment and an understanding of what a product-cycle looks like. You will also get a chance to work in a fantastically supportive and innovate team.

THE PERSON

You are currently studying for a degree in an Engineering, Scientific, Maths, Data or Computer Science discipline. Candidates will need to have at least a basic understanding of coding (Python) and some knowledge of machine learning/ how to train a model AND/OR how to set up a scientific experiment. You are collaborative by nature, interested to learn, self-motivated and ideally you have some interest in plant physiology or growing plants.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?

An Internship with IGS is not only about a project, or a specific goal. It is also about learning in a different environment, starting to understand the business world, and having a glimpse of what it could be like to work in a similar environment. For this reason, we want our Interns to spend time at one of our facilities, collaborating and getting involved. This experience is as important as the project output. There is also a strong social element to the programme. We encourage each cohort of Interns to work together and also to go out and be sociable! There will be a couple of company hosted events that will bring everybody together. We want all our Interns to feel part of something.

We are always looking out for great people. An Internship with IGS will also give you the opportunity to look closely at a potential employer!
